How many times would you continue reading auto-pilot without taking in any knowledge?
How frequently do you realy skim texts, trying to find interesting tidbits? And how frequently do you really feel disappointed?
We often wonder whether we, as company writers, are condemned to bore one another to tears.
In school, we’ve learned simple tips to compose. We learned all about grammar and punctuation. But did we learn to compose well? Did we learn to engage our readers? And exactly how become persuasive?
Whenever we want our communications to stick, we have to educate and amuse our visitors. We have to mix abstract advice with concrete imagery if we want to share our big ideas without boring our readers to tears.
You have actuallyn’t discovered that at college, perhaps you have? Me personally neither.

The ladder of abstraction
In school, you might have discovered that words are either abstract or concrete.
A pear, a grape, a juicy pineapple—these are all concrete terms because we are able to hold a pear inside our hand, taste a grape, and smell a ripe pineapple; they’re concrete.
